Where Broken Stories Become Beautiful: A Day in the Life of Restoration

When people ask what my role looks like as Executive Director of Restorative Hope Ministries, they expect strategy meetings, budgets, planning, and program development; those things are real and necessary.
However the true heartbeat of my days is watching God take the broken pieces of a woman’s life and quietly, faithfully rebuild something truly beautiful.
Every week on my way to the restorative safe home, Living Hope Farm, managed by Beauty from Ashes Ministry, I pray Matthew 5:16... a scripture that leads people to recognize Christ, the only path to true healing.
“Let your light shine before men… that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
In my twenties, I was healing from two decades of trauma... Jesus' light guided me through the difficult restoration process. Back then, the light of Jesus wasn’t just comforting, it was vital. Trauma had stripped away the important parts of me: confidence, self-worth, mental and physical well-being, relationships, dreams, and hope.
Now, decades later, I pray daily that the women we serve would see Jesus through the work of Restorative Hope Ministries and begin to discover Him and his transforming ways.
This is not just a message for survivors. Every one of us reaches seasons where we need light again, whether from grief, loss, hardship, fear, or life unraveling in unexpected ways.
The light of Jesus is available to all of us.
Where I See God Most Clearly
Transformation happens slowly.
It looks like a woman saying,“This is overwhelming” and then completing the assignment anyway.
It resembles a spark of pride in someone who hasn’t felt proud of herself in years.
It sounds like someone learning a new skill and announcing with joy, "Hey, I'm good at this!"
Scripture promises, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3
I see that happen in real time... one new skill, one fresh idea, one small victory at a time!
“Though your beginning was small, your latter days will be very great.” Job 8:7
This isn’t just for the women at the safe house. It’s a truth for anyone who feels like their lost, broken, or hurting.
God is not done with you yet!
Strength Looks Different Here
Survivors are some of the bravest people you will ever meet... not because they endured trauma, but because they choose to heal from it.
Healing is the courage to believe that there is hope for a transformed life.
And God speaks directly to that courage:
“And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you." 1 Peter 5:10
That’s a divine promise. How do I know? Because that is what happened to me. I suffered, and was redeemed!
This is not just for survivors of human trafficking, but to anyone who has lost years to grief, addiction, fear, disappointment, illness, heartbreak, or injustice.
God restores what life has stolen.
The Moment the Shift Happens
In the safe house, the most beautiful moment is when a woman decides she no longer wants to be defined by what happened to her, but by what God is doing in her.
It reminds me of this verse:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5
Darkness doesn’t win. Not in the safe house, not in my own story, and not in the story of anyone who turns toward Jesus.
Another scripture echoes this:
“He brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me.” Psalm 18:19
God delights in His daughters... in all of them. Not just the ones recovering from profound trauma, but the ones trying to survive their own quiet storms too. Your heart matters to Jesus Christ.
This Is Why We Do This Work
Restorative Hope Ministries exists to empower survivors, rebuild identities, develop workforce skills, and walk women back into the fullness of who God created them to be.
But beneath every practical tool is a spiritual truth that applies to all of us:
“Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.” Psalm 34:5
Every one of us has known what it feels like to lose radiance and gain shame, in one form or another.
Jesus restores radiance. He restores dignity. He restores purpose.
And I see this scripture come alive week after week:
“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the days to come.” Proverbs 31:25
The women we serve are beginning to laugh again... and find hope, in building skills for their future.
Why It Should Inspire You
I lived through my own darkness. I know what it feels like to be emptied of everything. But I also know what it feels like to rise again, restored, strengthened, rebuilt by His hand.
So when I watch these women take small steps forward, I’m reminded of something that applies to every person reading this:
God rebuilds everyone who comes to Him. Not just survivors of human trafficking. Not just the severely wounded. Not just the visibly broken. EVERYONE.
No matter what you’ve lost, no matter how much darkness you’ve walked through, no matter what part of your story still hurts... remember His Holy word.
“The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me.” Psalm 138:8
He will fulfill it for you too.
A day in this role isn’t glamorous. It’s sacred, purposeful
and led by God.
And every single day, I am grateful to witness not just the restoration of survivors, but the reminder that the same Jesus restoring them is the same Jesus available to all of us.
With Hope,
Melissa Mills, survivor leader
